Who We Are
A Family Built on Chess — Now Sharing It With Yours
At Chess Minds Calgary, you might notice something special, all our instructors share the last name Tolentino! That’s because we’re a family of lifelong chess players who turned a shared passion into something bigger: Calgary’s first family-run, in-person chess school for kids.
With over a decade of experience in playing, competing, and coaching, we’ve proudly represented Team Alberta in national tournaments and created some of our best memories over the board. Our dad and the three of us brothers are seasoned competitors, while our little sister is already rising through the intermediate ranks, and yes, even our mom joins in the fun from time to time!
We started Chess Minds Calgary in 2024 with one clear goal: to create the kind of program we wished existed when we were younger. One that’s structured yet fun, challenging but encouraging. Our entire family contributed to building a curriculum rooted in strategy, fundamentals, and real-life chess growth, not just casual play.
We believe in teaching the right way: step-by-step, with strong fundamentals, and in an environment where kids feel confident, curious, and inspired. Whether your child is a total beginner or an experienced tournament player, we’re here to guide their journey and make every move meaningful.
