Frequently Asked Questions
Students from ages 6 to 17 are eligible to join our program. For our Beginner class level, students must already be familiar with how the chess pieces move.
If you’re ever unsure about the right class level for your child, feel free to reach out!
We offer a free online assessment (which takes around 5 minutes) where one of our coaches plays an online chess match with your child. Afterwards, we'll recommend the appropriate class level for them to join. Just text "chess" to the phone #: 403-397-0017 and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Just enthusiasm! All materials and chess equipment are provided.
We do not offer refunds or make-up classes for missed days. However, students will still receive the weekly PDF concept review and access to our concept review video, which covers the key topic(s) taught that week. This helps them stay on track even if they’re absent.
We do not offer free trial lessons. However, you’re more than welcome to contact us if you’d like to briefly observe one of our ongoing classes. We’d be happy to show you what a typical class looks like.
To help students stay focused and engaged, we ask that parents wait outside the classroom during instruction. However, you’re welcome to step in briefly before or after class to meet/talk with one of our instructors.
Yes. Currently, all of our classes are held in-person, based in NW & NE, Calgary. You can view our current class locations and times on our website.
Each class typically has 2-3 coaches present (at times, 4 coaches). Class sizes range between 8 to 16 students per class. Higher class levels tend to be smaller, while lower-level classes may have more students.
Each semester runs for 10 weeks, having one class per week (10 total classes). Each class is 1 hour long.
Yes. Every student receives an evaluation report + a brief written message/feedback from one of our coaches. Students who successfully pass the class receive a certificate of completion at the end of the semester.
Yes. Our coaches actively monitor each student’s progress and level of play throughout each session. If a student is clearly operating above the class level, we’ll personally reach out to offer the option to move up to the next class level. It’s important to us that every student feels appropriately challenged and engaged. Placement changes are made thoughtfully, and always with your child’s best interest in mind.
Access to our video library is available to Chess Minds students who have been enrolled in at least one full semester. You’ll receive access to the class level(s) you are currently in and have previously completed.
The video library includes both concept review videos and weekly PDF summaries, organized by level. To access the library, you must first become a member on our website. Once registered, we will manually grant you access to the appropriate class content.
We only accept debit and credit card payments through our website using Stripe. All transactions are processed securely on the site.
